About the Dr. Jean Augustine Professorship in Transformative Education
This would be the first endowed professorship throughout the University of Toronto system to be named after a Black Canadian woman.
- Dr. Augustine earned her BA and MA degrees from U of T and built a career as a teacher and principal, understanding first-hand how access to education can open doors and enable individuals to contribute meaningfully to society. The establishment of this professorship will honour Dr. Augustine in perpetuity – a lasting legacy of her work in education.
- Both the United Nations and UNESCO have identified transformative education as a critical aspect of elevating lives globally.
- The professorship will be embedded in Victoria College’s Education & Society program and the Vic One Education stream. (Victoria has the only undergraduate education/teaching program in the University of Toronto system)
- This initiative will empower future leaders and educators to shape a society rooted in fairness and opportunity.
- This professorship will allow Vic to appoint a leading scholar to look at new ways of fostering critical thinking, problem solving and innovation – skills that students need to succeed in today’s workforce.
The event will raise funds for the Dr. Jean Augustine Professorship in Transformative Education. This professorship supports research and teaching initiatives designed to equip students with the essential critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and leadership skills required to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
